When we say that the Apple TV isnt a TV in the normal sense of the word, because it doesnt feature free-to-air channels, or a digital video recorder to catch shows while youre away, it does offer what could be described as channels, and this content keeps on growing leaving us hopeful for a future where the Apple TV will include links to OnDemand services just like our iPhones and iPads do think the iPlayer and 4OD apps and youre not to far away.
Apple has made multiple updates to the Apple TV software over recent month, adding a number of new app-style TV channels, delivering new content to Apple TV users.
For some times Apple has offered UK Apple TV users access to Netflix, YouTube, Vimeo and Wall Street Journal Live alongside the iTunes content.
Then in June 2013, Apple announced several new additions to its Apple TV, including Sky News sparking speculation that on-demand services such as BBC iPlayer could be coming to the Apple TV soon. However, there still isnt an iPlayer channel on the Apple TV, although you can stream iPlayer from your iPad or iPhone to your TV via Apple TV using AirPlay.
Unfortunately despite the fact that apps exist for iPhone and iPad, you cannot stream from the 4OD app, or ITV Player, or any other UK channels iOS apps, as they do not currently work with AirPlay.

There are currently two different models for sale and one model recently discontinued. And as you can expect, there are some big differences between them.
- Apple TV 4K. This is the flagship Apple TV model it supports 4K and HDR video and contains the same A10 processor as the iPad Pro. If you’re looking to buy Apple TV, this is the top-shelf model.
- Apple TV . This model supports 1080p HD video and has the A8 processor, which is the same processor as the iPhone 6. While you may be tempted to buy the 4th-generation if you don’t have a television that supports 4K or HDR, this model not only buys you the ability to upgrade your television in the future, it also doubles the speed of the processor and quadruples the speed of the graphics.
- Apple TV . This model is no longer available, but you may find one at auction sites like eBay or person-to-person sites like Craigslist. This version delivers video streaming capabilities without the processing power, and it doesn’t have access to the App Store. It’s cheaper than the other models because it’s older, but you may be better off investing in another streaming device like a Roku or Amazon Fire TV.

The Apple TV 4K supports H.264, HEVC , HEVC Dolby Vision, and MPEG-4. As for photos, it can display images in the following formats: HEIF, JPEG, GIF, and TIFF.

The Apple TV supports Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos and standard lossless audio, ranging from 16-bit at 44.1 kHz to 24-bit at 48 kHz. Apple says that the Apple TV 4K “currently doesn’t support Hi-Res Lossless,” leaving the door open to the possibility of a future software update with Hi-Res Lossless support for the device in the future.

How Well Does Apple TV Color Balance Work
By measuring patches of white and color with an iPhone, and using the information to adjust the output of the Apple TV, the new color balance feature is designed to take the guesswork out of getting balanced color. In CNET’s TV reviews I use expensive meters and software to achieve similar results — although as you might expect, the iPhone isn’t as effective as a pro setup.
To test the feature I chose a high-end LG G1 OLED TV from 2021, a midrange Vizio M-Series from 2020 and a budget Insignia Roku TV from 2015. TV quality varies so much there’s no way to cover it fully for this test, but I figured these three models are a decent cross-section. If anything they likely skew too much toward the budget side of things — I’m guessing many people who spend $180 on an Apple TV 4K are using it with relatively nice TVs.
I chose two picture modes for each TV, one relatively inaccurate and one accurate. Because the Apple TV 4K defaults to HDR output I measured the LG and Vizio in HDR, while I fed the Insignia SDR. Here’s the results, in average degrees Kelvin , of each mode before and after using Apple TV color balance.
