Maher was born in New York City. His father, William Aloysius Maher Jr., was a network news editor and radio announcer, and his mother, Julie Maher , was a nurse. He was raised in his Irish-American father’s Roman Catholic religion. Until his early teens, he was unaware that his mother, whose family was from Hungary, was Jewish. Owing to his disagreement with the Catholic Church’s doctrine about birth control, Maher’s father stopped taking Maher and his sister to Catholic church services when Maher was thirteen.

Maher was raised in River Vale, New Jersey and graduated from Pascack Hills High School in Montvale in 1974. He then attended Cornell University, where he double majored in English and History, and graduated in 1978. Maher has said, “Selling pot allowed me to get through college and make enough money to start off in comedy.”

In 2003, Maher became the host, co-producer, and co-writer of Real Time with Bill Maher, a weekly hour-long political comedy talk show on the cable television network HBO. Last night on HBOs Real Time with Bill Maher, the host doubled down on criticism of President Joe Bidens ass-backwards Afghanistan exit where America has had to help airlift over 100,000 civilians out of the country. Tens of thousands more are expected to flee the South Asian country prior to the last troops leaving.

Ill tell you, America not so good at wining wars, but the getting the f**k out part, were getting a lot of practice at that, he said to his studio audience.

Of course there was this suicide bombing which makes it a giant tragedy now, said Maher of the whole ordeal. Am I the only one who thinks we did this completely ass-backwards? We pulled the troops out, and then tried to evacuate the civilians? I feel that was a little backwards.

Mahers monologue comes one week after he ridiculed Americas exit strategy and just one day after 13 U.S. service members and 169 Afghan refugees were killed while attempting to flee the country which is now under the theocratic rule of the Taliban. ISIS-K, a group that Maher referred to as not a boy band and the Delta variant of ISIS, claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing that injured hundreds that were gathered in front of security checkpoints leading to an American plane.

Maher was not too happy with the current conditions in Kabul.

The comedian mentioned Joe Bidens message to the attackers behind Thursdays bombing that we will hunt you down and make you pay.

First up, Bill Maher interviews Saru Jayaraman. It marks her fourth appearance on Real Time.

Jayaraman is an attorney and activist, known as the co-founder of the non-profit public service organization Restaurant Opportunities Centers United. Her latest book is One Fair Wage:Ending Subminimum Pay in America. Expect a conversation around a national minimum wage and the tipping system.
