How To Factory Reset The Apple TV
Ok, the quick restart hasn’t worked time for more drastic measures. Or, perhaps, you want to pass your Apple TV onto someone else and need to wipe it first. Again, the process is a little different between models.
If you have an Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, here’s what to do:
1. Go to the home screen.2. Go to Settings.3. Tap System.4. Tap Reset.
Here you’ll be given two options: Reset or Reset and Update. The first takes the Apple TV back to exactly how you bought it, while the latter will wipe everything but will then automatically update to the latest version of tvOS.
If you have an older Apple TV, the process is slightly different. Do this:
1. Go to the home screen.2. Go to Settings.3. Tap General.4. Tap Reset.
The options you now see are Reset All Settings and Restore. They’re confusingly worded, but Reset All settings will wipe everything back to how the Apple TV was when you bought it Restore will also erase everything but will update the software once it’s rebooted.
But in all cases, everything will be wiped out – all settings and stored information.

New Apple TV 4k : Features
There’s no reason to expect major new features from the new Apple TV. The Apple TV 4K was updated with HDMI 2.1, and is already much more powerful than just about any other streaming box on the planet.
There are some software features that the Apple TV doesn’t have yet , but these wouldn’t require new hardware.
The upgrade to its processor might allow for more advanced gaming features, but these will only be used sparingly, most likely.
What we’d be really interested in is a Siri Remote that includes the Ultra Wideband communication technology from Apple’s AirTags, so that you could use an iPhone to literally point you towards which couch cushion the remote is hiding under when you lose it.

How To Turn The TV On And Off Using Apple TV Remote
In the Settings > Remotes and Devices screen, youll see an option for Control TVs and Receivers under Home Theater Control. Go ahead and set this to On if its not already.
Once this is on, your TV should turn on automatically when your Apple TV wakes from sleep. It should also automatically change to the appropriate HDMI input.
If this doesnt work, then you need to enable CEC on your TV.
Youll notice that if you have Control TVs and Receivers Off, Apple TV will give you the message, For better control, enable CEC on your TV.
So, what the heck is CEC? Im glad you asked.
HDMI-CEC stands for High Definition Media Interface Consumer Electronics Control, and most HDTVs support it. But you wouldnt immediately know it because: Most TVs have it disabled by default, and many manufacturers call it something different.
Dont ask me why on either of those items. Despite being an industry standard, like Wi-Fi andinfuriatingly tiny ketchup packets, manufacturers use other names for HDMI-CEC :
- Samsung: Anynet+
- Philips: EasyLink
- Sony: BRAVIA Sync
Vizio wins points in my book because they call it a spade and refer to it as HDMI-CEC.
How you enable HDMI-CEC on your TV will vary. Googling Enable HDMI-CEC Samsung or Turn on HDMI-CEC LG TV will get you there, as will your manual.
On my Vizio TV, it was easy to find. I found it under CEC in the System menu.

When Is Apple Going To Release A New Apple TV
There’s a possibility that it’ll be soon. Apple last updated the Apple TV 4K in April 2021, but it wasn’t a big update the new model looked identical but updated with a new processor and a redesigned Siri Remote. Unfortunately, if Apple releases a new Apple TV in the near features, it’s not likely to be a huge improvement either. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple this new Apple TV 4K will look the same but get a newer chipset and more RAM . It could be announced before the end of 2022.
Maybe the biggest news on the Apple TV rumor front is that, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple analyst, the company is working on a new low-priced Apple TV. The most affordable Apple TV HD costs $149, and Apple likely wants to create something closer to $100, which is what many of the popular streaming sticks are priced at.
