The Yankees Amazon Prime debut left many fans missing the action.

The Yankees 4-1 series-opening win over the Guardians on Friday night at the Stadium was the first of 21 scheduled Yankees games that will be exclusively broadcast on the streaming service, as The Posts Andrew Marchand previously reported.

Not only is the broadcast exclusive to Prime, its limited to only the Yankees local region. The only option for out of market fans, including Guardians fans, to access the game is through an MLB.TV out-out-market subscription, which starts at $139.99 a year.

That left fans outside the New York metro area unable to realistically watch the game, regardless of whether they subscribe to Amazon Prime or not.

Amazon Adds Mlbtv To Prime Video Channels

Tech giant to offer baseball OTT service via its streaming platform.

Amazon has added Major League Baseballs over-the-top service MLB.TV to its Prime Video Channels platform.

The agreement allows Prime members to add the MLB service as an additional subscription, giving customers access to live out-of-market games and on-demand baseball content via Prime Video on connected devices, including Amazon Fire TV.

Prime members in the US can subscribe to MLB.TV for US$24.99 per month, or by making a one-time payment of US$118.99 for a Season Pass, following a seven-day free trial.

According to Wall Street firm BMO Capital Markets, Amazon shares 70 per cent of the subscription fees from its Prime Video Channels with partners but with some deals that can be as much as 85 per cent or as little as 50 per cent. The platform reportedly brought in US$1.7 billion in revenue last year, more than double year over year.

Prime Video will be another great distribution platform for out-of-market fans to have daily access to live baseball, said Chris Tully, MLBs executive vice president for global media. Combining MLB.TV with Prime Video will provide a seamless experience for subscribers to follow their favourite teams and players.

The acquisition would apparently give Amazon rights to stream Yankees matches available to the Yes Network in New York, as well as the channels other sports content including games featuring National Basketball Associations Brooklyn Nets.
