2021 was perhaps a bit slower than usual, but it was good to see production picking up again after the pandemic. New shows on Acorn TV included The Larkins, Under the Vines, a new Dalgliesh adaptation, another season of Ms. Fisher’s Modern Mysteries, and the Northern Irish thriller Bloodlands among many other things.

Though not an Acorn TV-made series, the French mystery series Candice Renoir was also a surprise hit on the platform.

      Dead Still

2020 was a rough year for many things, including British TV. While there were plenty of great shows to watch , a lot of more recent shows were unable to get new seasons out as originally planned. Aside from the lockdowns, safety precautions added time and expense to productions.

Some of the best new shows on Acorn TV in 2020 included the Irish period mystery Dead Still, new episodes of the cozy mystery Agatha Raisin, and the delightful Tony Robinson series Hidden Britain by Drone .

So Which One Should I Get: Britbox Vs Acorn TV

Acorn TV | Coming in 2019

Both services are available to watch in a range of ways, both are similarly priced, and both offer fairly standard user experiences. This means theres really only one way to decide which service is right for you: what do you want to watch?

Acorn TV definitely has some hidden gems, and the library has grown more substantial in both the UK and US, but it still looks quite lean in comparison to its ITV and BBC-backed competitor, BritBox. BritBox is going to cater to a far broader audience, and it offers a significantly wider range of content for fans of British shows.

We’d recommend making use of the Acorn TV free trial to try out some of their most popular shows and see if the platform is right for you, but if you only want to pay for one more streaming service, the better choice is still BritBox.

      Britbox Vs Acorn TV: Availability

Acorn TV and BritBox, like many streaming services these days, are both available in different areas, and on different platforms.

BritBox is currently available in Australia, Canada, US, the UK, and South Africa. Subscribers in the US, Canada or Australia can use their subscription in other regions.

You can watch BritBox on: Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV devices, Chromecast, YouView set-top boxes, select smart TVs, iOS and Android mobiles and tablets, Roku devices, and in your browser.

Acorn TV is available in many more regions right now, including the US, Canada, the UK, parts of Southern America, the Nordics, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico.

You can currently watch Acorn TV in your browser , Apple TV, Roku and Fire TV devices, Chromecast, and on iOS and Android mobiles and tablets.

Finally, you can find both Acorn TV and BritBox available to add to ansubscription as Prime Video channels in both the US and the UK.

Britbox Vs Acorn TV: User Interface And Features

Both BritBox and Acorn TV opt for very simple, easy-to-use interfaces that are very similar and easy to navigate in your browser.

Both curate their content into helpful categories with navigation bars, and both showcase their recommendations in helpful carousels, too. Viewers can quite happily jump between TV shows and movies, A-Zs, and genre-specific lists with relative ease.

There are only slight variations between the actual streaming service either, Acorn TV offers the choice of streaming quality whereas BritBox doesn’t yet, but BritBox has the option to skip ahead or backward by 10 seconds which is not available on Acorn TV. Neither interface is as feature-rich as the bigger services, but you’ll find closed captions and the option to watch in full-screen on a computer easily enough.

The big win in utility is Acorn TVs picture-in-picture player, though. This will pop out a small player and pin it to your desktop as an overlay, allowing you to crack on with other tasks on a computer.

However, BritBox users can opt to download their favorite shows on iOS and Android mobiles and tablets, which Acorn TV users cannot do at the time of writing.
