Watch BEFORE You Buy a New TV! (2021/2022 TV Buying Guide)

At nearly $3,000, its safe to say that the Sony A90J has a luxury price tag. But for the money, youre getting an OLED with the best picture quality weve ever tested. Not only does the A90J surpass our previous luxury pick, the A8H, but it beats out every other TV on this list.

While OLED typically provides superior performance over LED or QLED, the Sony A90J is the brightest OLED weve ever tested. It delivers a superb amount of detail and hyperaccurate colors.

The improved OLED panel, which comes in 55-inch, 65-inch and a huge 75-inch variant, is brighter than ever before, and a new heat sink lets the panel get hotter and, according to Sony, delivers sharper images while still keeping the panel safe. The result is a more immersive viewing experience. This also lets the A90J perform well even in a space thats less than optimal for viewing. We watched during the day, in a bright living room with sunlight flowing in from the left, and could still make out images on the TV clearly and with good color accuracy.

Aside from the panel, the A90Js performance depends on Sonys Cognitive Processor XR, which, the company claims, aims to analyze content in the same way a human eye does.

The A90J supports a full range of standards, including HDR, HDR+ and Dolby Vision, and the TV can detect these automatically. A Dolby Vision or HDR mode will be triggered on supported content and if you want colors to pop with standard content, wed look to Vivid or Director mode.

Great TVs That Aren’t Quite As Pricey

LG OLED65A1AUA, LG OLED65A2PUA, Samsung QN65Q80B, Samsung QN65Q80A, Sony XR-65X90CJ,Most of the TVs listed in the top group, above, cost $2,000 or more. Thats outside the budget for a lot of people. As alternatives, these five 65-inch sets from LG, Samsung, and Sony are less expensive but still deliver top-notch HD and 4K picture quality, effective HDR performance, and satisfying sound.

The LG OLED65A1AUA, a 2021 model sold via warehouse clubs, and the LG OLED65A2PUA, a 2022 model that replaces it thats sold through electronics stores and mass merchants, are both entry-level 4K OLED TVs. They have top-notch picture quality but HDR performance that falls short of the LG C2- and G2-series sets noted above. The Samsung QN65Q80B, in the companys top regular QLED series for 2022, and the Samsung QN65Q80A, the 2021 model it replaces, both deliver very good overall picture quality, and satisfying HDR performance. Both have wider-than-average viewing angles for an LCD TV and very good sound. But they lack the Mini LED backlights found in the pricier Neo QLED sets.

The Sony XR-65X90CJ, a 2021 model sold via warehouse clubs, does a bit better than the Samsungs listed above in delivering HD and 4K picture quality, with similar HDR performance. Its viewing angle and sound arent as good, though.

All the sets are smart TVs. The LG and Samsung sets use their respective companies smart TV systems, while the Sony uses the Android TV system.

How Big Should My TV Be

Go for a TV around 40 for a bedroom and one between 49 and 60 for an average-sized living room. Bigger can be better when it comes to TVs, but an enormous TV is wasted on a small room.

TBH, some rooms are . . . awkward. Just remember that no matter the size or shape of your room, you wont be able to see your TV from every nook and cranny because of a simple concept called viewing angle.

Quantum Dot OLED is the newest type of in premium TV panel technology, and Sony is bringing it to the market this year with the A95K. QD-OLED promises increased brightness and vibrancy, as well as more accurate colors, and should beat the picture produced by the A90J, our current pick for a luxury TV and the best model weve tested so far.

Sonys also marching into the Mini-LED space with a premium offering that will compete with the TCL-6 Series, our current favorite among Mini-LED sets. Sony promises more accurate control of lighting and no blooming effect from brightly lit objects in dark scenes.. Well need to test it alongside the TCL 6-Series. Samsungs revised top-of-the-line Neo QLED also features Mini-LED and will still be in the line for 2022

So what does this mean? Brands continue to release models using both OLED and Mini-LED technology, all of them battling for the title of the best possible picture, but in reality providing alternatives for buyers looking to watch in different types of rooms. OLEDs still have the edge on absolute picture quality, but are still less bright, so theyre a better fit for darker rooms, while brighter Mini-LEDs can work in spaces that get a lot of natural light.

When Should I Buy A Smart TV

With all technology, there’s always something new around the corner such as 8K. Simply put, you should buy a smart TV when you need one.

If your existing TV has failed or you want to upgrade, check out our guides for more information on what would work best for you.

Almost every new set â aside from small TVsâ will be 4K resolution too, and come with some form of HDR capability, if not support for dynamic HDR formats like Dolby Vision and HDR10+.

It’s worth considering whether you also want to go for a QLED or OLED TV too.

While new TVs are launched quite regularly amongst the main brands, it’s often worth hanging back and buying last year’s models. They’re usually available for a lower price and the improvements are typically incremental rather than substantial.

As ever, it’s worth looking at the differences between a new model and the version it’s replacing. The introduction of Samsung’s Ultra Viewing Angle technology was a big boon for its high-end QLEDs â as is the implementation of Mini LED on new Samsung TVsâ but other updates aren’t nearly as notable.

How Much Do Screen Refresh Rates Matter

Best TV Brands Reviewed: Samsung, LG Sony TCL Hisense & Panasonic

If youre watching sports or action movies, the picture will look less choppy with a refresh rate of 120 Hz or 240 Hz.

But pay attention to whether the refresh-rate number is listed with a marketing term like smooth instead of the bona fide native refresh rate. Overly market-y terms or a ridiculously large number like 600 Hz usually mean the high speed is achieved with motion interpolation.

Motion interpolation still makes a picture look crispmaybe too crispbut its just flashing the same frame multiple times to trick your brain into seeing it that way. The result is often referred to as the Soap Opera Effect because all that crispness can make your shows look like cheap daytime television.

For those who purchase a TV with a high refresh rate that relies on motion interpolation, you should be able to turn that feature off to avoid the Soap Opera Effect if necessary.

Pro tip: Look for a native refresh rate of 120 Hz or 240 Hz for a crisp picture.

How To Clean A TV Screen

If you don’t touch the screen and leave fingerprints behind, there’s really no need for anything but the occasional dusting. But there are a few tips to keep your TV in good condition.

Firstly, don’t clean the TV while it’s on. Turn it off and let it cool down, otherwise you’ll have evaporation issues that will leave more streaks than you’re removing.

To look after your TV, each week you should:

  • wipe dust off the bezel and surrounds with a dry microfibre cloth
  • gently buff fingerprints and dust off the screen with a damp microfibre cloth or an LCD screen cleaning solution
  • NOT use multipurpose cleaners or anything containing bleach or ammonia to clean it, nor should you use anything sharp or pointy.

Also check the settings to make sure your TV is set to download firmware updates automatically. If not, turn it on as this is an important security feature. It’s worth wiping down the remote with a soft damp cloth once a month as well.

Choosing The Best Smart TV For Your Needs

There are a number of key criteria that everybody should consider before they buy their next smart TV. Here they are:

  • Do you like to switch the lights off when you watch TV, or do you watch it with an overhead light on, or chiefly during the daytime? It may sway your decision, especially if youre choosing between a QLED and NanoCell TV.
  • If you have any smart devices set up around your home, you may want to consider looking out for a TV with an in-built voice assistant like Alexa, Google Assistant or Samsungs Bixby. Via your smart TV, you can potentially do anything from dimming the lights to adjusting your thermostat.
  • Gaming fan? If you plan to connect your console to your television, its worth looking at the refresh rates in the specs of any TVs youre looking at. The refresh rate simply means how many times the image changes per second: look out for sets with 120HZ or high.

Do Smart TVs Come With Alexa And Google

Many smart TVs come with some kind of voice assistant. All Amazon Fire TVs come with Alexa built in, while Sony, TCL and Hisense TVs that run on Google’s operating system offer Google Assistant. Many new Samsung and LG TVs come with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa built-in as well. Roku TVs and Vizio TVs, meanwhile, respond to voice commands but don’t work with Alexa or Google Assistant.

On most of these TVs you’ll need to speak into the remote to use voice commands, but some also respond to hands-free “Alexa” or “Hey Google” wake words, just like a smart speaker. And many TVs can also be paired with a smart speaker, such as an Echo Dot or , to receive voice commands.
