Apple TV 4k 202: Specs And Features
At a glance, the 2022 Apple TV 4K models look just like their predecessors. Both are small, palm-sized cubes, black with the Apple logo etched on top. They connect to a TV over an HDMI connection, and while the cheaper one offers only Wi-Fi connectivity, the more expensive model has an Ethernet port, too.
Its under the hood where things get a bit more exciting, though. Each now uses the A15 Bionic chip, a powerful chipset that was introduced with the iPhone 13 line-up, and continues into the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus handsets. This is a significant upgrade for the Apple TV 4K boxes, which previously used the A12 Bionic chipset.
With the A15 Bionic chipset now in the Apple TV 4K 2022 model, users can expect a much more responsive system overall, not to mention increased performance in 3D apps and gaming applications, which could sometimes feel sluggish compared to their mobile counterparts. Apple is quoting a 50% better CPU performance, and 30% better GPU performance.
Storage optionally makes a significant jump too. While 64GB remains the entry point, the more expensive Apple TV 4K model for this year doubles that to 128GB again a blessing for anyone thats attempted to juggle the large file sizes of Apple Arcade titles on an Apple TV 4K box.
Apple TV 4k Specs And Features
The device is powered by the new A15 Bionic chip, which delivers a faster performance and more fluid gameplay than previous models. This streaming device does still have the features that made previous generations so popular, including the connectivity with other Apple devices.
Apple describes the streaming device as being part of their ecosystem, which means you have unlimited access to different aspects of the brand. First things first it wouldnt be an Apple TV without Apple TV+, the brand’s own streaming service which hosts unique content like the recently renewed Ted Lasso, the Oscar-winning Coda, and star-studded drama The Morning Show.

The streaming device gives access to other Apple features too, including Apple Music, the games platform Apple Arcade, and Apple Fitness+, as well as the ability to add your other streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus.
This new Apple TV 4K model also comes with the updated tvOS 16 which includes an update to Siri allowing quicker and easier voice control which recognises each users voice individually very fancy! What’s New In The Third
The new additions this time around are notable, if not numerous. The third-gen Apple TV 4K boasts a new A15 Bionic chip at its heart, which replaces the A12 Bionic found in last year’s version.
That 2021-era model wasn’t exactly lacking in processing horsepower, but Apple says this newer chip offers up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to a 30 percent improvement on the GPU side. While that may not translate into dramatically smoother menus when you’re scrolling through streaming apps, it could come in handy for those into playing games on their Apple TV 4K.
Along with better performance, Apple also touted the A15’s improvements in efficiency. In fact, this latest iteration leaves out the internal fan that previous models used for cooling. As a result, the overall case is slightly smaller in all directions compared to the 2021 version it’s replacing.
This latest model also brings with it HDR10+ support, a Samsung-backed alternative to the Dolby Vision standard that previous 4K models already offered. The addition of HDR10+ opens up more high-dynamic range options and should make the third-gen streaming device more attractive to owners of compatible TVs.
There’s another slight change from last year, but it’s on the remote control. The Siri Remote received a substantial revamp when the 2021 Apple TV 4K was announced. And while this year’s remote retains the same overall design, it does swap out the Lightning port for a USB-C connector.
What Are The Differences Between The Apple TV Models
There are currently two different models for sale and one model recently discontinued. And as you can expect, there are some big differences between them.
- Apple TV 4K. This is the flagship Apple TV model it supports 4K and HDR video and contains the same A10 processor as the iPad Pro. If you’re looking to buy Apple TV, this is the top-shelf model.
- Apple TV . This model supports 1080p HD video and has the A8 processor, which is the same processor as the iPhone 6. While you may be tempted to buy the 4th-generation if you don’t have a television that supports 4K or HDR, this model not only buys you the ability to upgrade your television in the future, it also doubles the speed of the processor and quadruples the speed of the graphics.
- Apple TV . This model is no longer available, but you may find one at auction sites like eBay or person-to-person sites like Craigslist. This version delivers video streaming capabilities without the processing power, and it doesn’t have access to the App Store. It’s cheaper than the other models because it’s older, but you may be better off investing in another streaming device like a Roku or Amazon Fire TV.

Acquisition Of Back Catalog Film And TV Content
In mid-2020, Apple began discussions with film and television studios to license their previously released content as part of an effort to build a back catalog of non-original films and television shows for the streaming service. The shift was designed to help the service better compete against the large content libraries offered by competitors like Netflix. This represented a pivot for Apple, which had initially attempted to build the service entirely on original content, avoiding licensing fees to help keep monthly subscription fees low, and relying on its Apple TV Channels content partners to supply other content users wanted.
Analysts believed that the addition of older, highly re-watchable content like popular sitcoms and well liked films would help to retain the slowly growing subscriber base, while Apple continues to develop original content. The shift was also an acknowledgement of poor growth, especially relative to competing services.
The back catalog development was also seen as a move by Apple to attempt to persuade free trial users to transition into paid users as the first wave of one-year trials was scheduled to expire in November 2020.
Apple TV 4k 2021 Review: Features And TVos
The Apple TV 4K 2021 features a few new features that are great to have, though many are still on the previous version of the streaming box. Screen calibration, which came with tvOS 14.5, lets you use an iPhone to adjust the color balance, brightness and contrast of your TV display.
Heres how it works. You go into the Apple TV settings, then video and audio, then calibration. Then, you can hold up your iPhones front-facing camera and it will make adjustments for. However, I went through the process and it just told me that my TV didnt need to be calibrated the same will go for anyone using Dolby Vision, which has a custom video profile.
The new model also offers audio sharing, which basically acts like a headphone splitter. Now, you can pair two AirPods to the box for dual private listening. Our Streaming editor has found that watching TV with the AirPods Pro is a great fit, in part due to their noise canceling.
And the most recent tvOS finally introduced multi-user support. If there are several adults with their own Apple IDs living in the household, they can access their personalized apps, music and videos.
Everything else you expect from an Apple product is all there. I dont game nor have an Apple Watch, but you can pair a controller to play Apple Arcade or a watch to work out with Apple Fitness. Airplay from my iPhone worked seamlessly, as did screen mirroring from my MacBook Air. And you could use the Apple TV 4K as a HomeKit hub, since it supports Thread.

We are referring to it as the third generation Apple TV 4K to differentiate between the 2021 Apple TV 4K and the 2017 Apple TV 4K. Use The Correct Hdmi Input And Settings
Depending on your TV, you may need to use a different HDMI input on your TV for high quality 4K or HDR video. For example, some TVs only support HDR on HDMI input 2 or HDMI input 3. Check your TV user guide to identify which inputs support 4K and HDR.
In addition to using the correct HDMI input, you may need to enable HDR10 or Dolby Vision in the video or HDMI settings on your TV. In some cases, the setting may not refer directly to HDR10 or Dolby Vision, examples include Ultra, Deep, or Enhanced video or color.

The Apple TV 4K with Wi-Fi and 128GB storage sells for $129 / £149 / AU$205, while the Wi-Fi plus Gigabit Ethernet with 256GB storage version sells for $149 / £169.00 / AU$240.
Prices for the Apple TV 4K are notably lower than for previous versions, making this Apples least expensive 4K streaming box yet.

Apple TV 4k : Early Verdict
The new Apple TV 4K is more of a refresh than it is a revolutionary redesign, but since we called last year’s Apple TV 4K the best media streamer out there, a price cut and upgraded hardware look extremely promising on paper.
If just want 4K streaming, well, lots of smart TVs come with that capability, and you can spend $50 on a Roku Streaming Stick 4K or Fire TV Stick 4K if all you want is to stream in 4K, so Apple’s premium streamer isn’t the only option and will definitely cost you more than its competitors.
However, while those who weren’t interested in an Apple TV in the past might not be interested in this one, if you like the Apple ecosystem and have the cash, the new Apple TV 4K looks to be an improvement on an excellent streamer.

Check Your Hdmi Cable
If there’s an issue with your HDMI cable, you might see a message on your TV that says that your HDMI cable might be having trouble maintaining a stable connection. If your Apple TV 4K is connected to a 4K compatible TV, you can run a 2 minute test to check your HDMI cable connection. Go to Settings > Video and Audio and select Check HDMI Connection.
4K video, especially HDR10 and Dolby Vision, requires an HDMI cable compatible with these formats. Apple recommends HDMI cables that have the Compatible Dolby Vision mark as they have been tested with Apple TV 4K and a wide range of TVs. An example is the Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable.
If you still experience issues with your HDMI cable connection, check all of your connections and make sure that your HDMI cable has the label Compatible Dolby Vision.
