How To Watch Local TV Without Cable

When I was researching local cable company pricing for this post, I found that most of the cable companies where I live charge $60 per month just for viewing local TV channels.

Bigger packages started at about $75 per month, and that didnt include taxes, fees, installation charges, and monthly equipment rental fees.

As you can see, a cable or satellite TV package can get expensive quickly, even when you just want to have a better quality reception to watch local TV channels.

So, what are your alternatives? Here are some top ideas.

Buy Tivo Roamios Dvr Recording Device

If you want a device that seamlessly integrates OTA viewing, recording, and streaming in one neat package, consider the Tivo Roamio DVR Recording Device. Its a steep one-time cost, but eventually pays for itself if you are able to ditch your cable subscription.

You can enjoy your favorite streaming apps including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, and more, without swapping inputs all the time.

With four packages to choose from, it can be hard to nail down your best option with DIRECTV. We recommend ENTERTAINMENT All Included for its excellent basic channels and PREMIER All Included because it lavishes you in premium channels. The latter package basically makes you TV-watching royalty.

With DIRECTV, as your monthly price increases, so does your channel count. Thats pretty standard as far as TV packages go. What youll want to consider, however, is that a lot of the channels included with the more expensive DIRECTV packages are filler channels that you might not need.

Like we said before when it comes to DIRECTV packages and pricing, ENTERTAINMENT gives you tons of popular channels for a decent price.

Ready It’s Time To Cancel Your Cable Service

How To Watch Local Channels Without Cable

After you’ve lived with streaming for a while and have grown comfortable with the process of clicking on an app rather than firing up your cable box, it’s time to make the fateful call. Your cable provider might offer you incentives to stick around and you’ll have to weigh those against the benefits of cutting the cord, but do so carefully. Especially if the offer is contingent on signing a two-year contract. A lot can change in two years and with the freedom of streaming, it’s simply a lot easier to save money than with cable.

In the end, cutting cable TV isn’t for everyone. No single device or service has as many channels as a premium cable package. Juggling different services to find the shows you want to watch can be more effort than some people are willing to put in.

On the other hand, cutting cable is getting easier with every new option that hits the market. Beyond the savings, you get the freedom of being able to pick and choose the service you want — and drop it like a hot potato if you don’t like it anymore, your favorite show ends or something new comes along. Cutting cable is all about choice and if you do it right, you’ll never miss that old cable box.

Watch Local Channels On Roku And Amazon Fire TV

Obviously, if you chose to use Hulu, YouTube TV, or other live TV streaming service to watch your local broadcast channels, you can download the app to your streaming device and watch local TV. However, if you decided to go with a TV antenna, we need to go into more detail.

If you have a Roku TV instead of the standalone Roku device, a TV Antenna Roku app reads input from the coaxial port on your Roku TV back. Connect your TV antenna to the port and turn on the TV Antenna app. You will have access to a program guide and all the channels your antenna receives. Amazon Fire Smart TVs have similar functionality.

If you dont have a Roku TV but a Roku device, you may still be able to use an antenna. However, you will need some additional hardware. Here are two solutions.

Tablo DVR This is a DVR for your TV antenna. Your antenna plugs into Tablo DVR, and the Tablo plugs into your home router. From there, you can use the Roku table app to manage the DVR, watch live TV, and set recordings. Read more in our review of DVRs for your TV Antenna.

HDHomeRun Connect Duo This device is not a DVR. It connects to your router via ethernet. You then connect a TV antenna to the HDHomeRun, and the TV signal is available on your home network through the HD HomeRun Roku app. This device is .

How To Watch Sports Without Cable

Perhaps the No. 1 reason people are reluctant to cut the cord is watching live sports. Streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Video are great to watch TV shows, movies, documentaries, and mini-series on-demand, but they lack live programming.

If you cannot live without sports, then you will need to subscribe to a service like Paramount Plus, Hulu with Live TV, Sling TV , or go with something like YouTube TV or fuboTV .

Sports programming adds another layer of cost when you are trying to cut the cord so you can watch TV without cable. A friend felt really proud of himself after canceling his satellite TV service and its $160-a-month bill until football season started. He opted for YouTube TV during football season, but still saved a lot of money over satellite TV.

Live TV Streaming App

A popular solution to cutting the cord is subscribing to a live TV streaming service. And the service that knows how to give you local channels for a low price is Sling TV. If youre just wanting local channels, why pay $50 or more a month when you can spend $30 with Sling?

The Sling Orange package doesnt have any local channels, but the Sling Blue package gives you your local FOX, NBC, and NBC regional sports channels, among 30 other popular channels like FOX News Channel, MSNBC, CNN, and Food Network.

But if youre willing to spend $65 per month for a live TV streaming service, we recommend YouTube TV.

YouTube TV will give you 85 channels including your local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and PBS channels. You and your family can also enjoy Disney Channel, Food Network, and ESPN.

While these last two options, the apps and the live TV streaming service, benefit the whole family, the next two options are strictly for the newsies.

Why Is Cable So Expensive

Bundling is one of the big reasons cable TV prices have become so high in recent years. For instance, the average monthly cable bill for consumers ranges from $70 to $100 per month in most homes. Many people believe the cable providers are to blame for bundling and price hikes.

Sure, they do make some good money from the bundling of channels. However, it is the large networks that are actually behind higher prices. They force cable providers to bundle unwanted channels along with the popular ones.

Those big networks have all the power. If the providers refuse to bundle channels, the networks will respond by simply finding a different provider who will.

Therefore, the providers keep agreeing to the demands of the networks and customers keep paying high bills because many are locked into a long-term contract. Nevertheless, dissatisfied customers are looking forand findingalternatives.

How *i* Get Free Cable Television

Again, this isnt a trick.

Im not using a black box cable television descrambler.

Theres no hacking or illegal tech either.

All I have is my television which had a built-in HD tuner and a cable connected to the wall jack:

I get cable television using no provider equipment: just my tv plugged into the wall jack.

This is the best part!

Im using nothing at all.

As you can see above, there isnt a cable box.

And I swear that I didnt conveniently remove or photoshop an HD antenna or anything just for this article.

So how did I get this to work?

Oh, youre going to love this:

Its so simple its disgusting.

I scanned for it!

Yes, thats all I did to get cable television beyond what my Limited Basic plan calls for.

All I had to do was go to my televisions setup, and tell it to scan for available stations.

When it finished after an hour, it had found all of the standard stations which are included with the Limited Basic cable package my HOA dues cover, plus about 32 or so digital stations.

The best part was the tvs built-in tuner also pulled in the in-between HD versions!

After the scanning was done, all I had to do was go through the channels one at a time and when I came across one that was in standard definition, I simply removed it from my available channels.

Now, I know what you are thinkingthis must be some sort of fluke, like when you were a kid and set the tv to channel 2 and the cable box to the porn channel and you could see it semi-clearly.

What I Use To Watch TV Without Cable

I actually use three of the five options in this article. I personally use the$5.99 Hulu plan, the $13.99 Netflix plan, and I have access to Amazon Prime Video because of my annual Prime membership.

Between these options, I can watch nearly any show or movie that I desire. My monthly cost is $19.98 for Netflix and Hulu. I dont count the Amazon Prime Video cost because I get that as a part of my $119 annual Prime membership fee.

To stream my favorite movies and shows, I use a Roku device.

Live TV Streaming Services

Streaming video on demand is a great way to replace content from TV: you can watch your favorite shows and movies online whenever you want! But is that really the same thing as being able to watch TV without cable? To some people, sure but others might find that their favorite things about TV are missing. What about brand-new episodes of the latest network TV shows? What about channel surfing and just seeing what’s on? What about live sports?

One answer to these cries is the live TV streaming service, or skinny bundle. The idea is a pretty simple one: these services are like cable subscriptions, only online and cheaper.

Cable stinks, but it didn’t always stink, and its channel bundles include some great stuff. That inspired the companies behind the major live TV streaming services to set out to beat cable at its own game. They began to offer pay TV multichannel services industry lingo for cable- and satellite-type pay TV bundles only they slashed the size and the price of cable’s bulky bundles and offered folks a key selection of channels for less. And since these services stream online, you can watch them anywhere and on almost any device.

Here are a few of the live TV streaming services you should know about. Click the name of any of these services to sign up. Many of these services offer free trials!

As with the SVOD services, this isn’t an exhaustive list, but these are the live TV streaming services that we know and love best here at

Best Free Streaming Channels

There are so, so many free streaming channels available. You could honestly have an endless supply of tv and movies to watch using just free streaming apps. They make money by showing ads, just like local and cable tv.

Peacock, Roku TV, LoCast, PBS, PBSKids, SlingTV, HGTV, Disney, and Nickelodeon are some of our favorite free streaming apps.

Free streaming apps offer a limited amount of the shows that are usually shown on those channels. So, you might have 4 episodes of a bunch of their shows on the free version of those apps.

YouTube is also free. Younger kids, teens, and adults love watching their favorite youtubers as much regular tv.

Most of the free apps also have a monthly paid version that unlocks a lot more episodes and shows. Generally the fees are pretty low. Mostly around $5 per month for a single channel, like PBS Kids or NickHits.

With so many free options plus a plug in local TV indoor antenna you could completely get rid of cable and still have tons of tv shows and movies available.
