How to Watch Local Channels Without Cable in 2022

There are a number of live TV streaming services that offer channels that you also see in cable subscriptions.

These services are used by cord-cutters to watch local channels and popular cable channels, including AMC, A& E and ESPN.

To get started, you just need an Internet connection. Once you pick a live TV service, and sign up for a free trial, you can download the app to your Smart TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Google Chromecast or Apple TV.

You can easily cancel online, and jump to a competing service whenever you want. Some cord cutters even jump from platform to platform throughout the year just to catch certain shows.

Heres a quick look at each of these live streaming services.

Is Live Sports Streaming Worth It

If youre a fan of the Big Ten Network but dont live in the regions it covers, it can be tough to find it unless you sign up for a streaming service. Live sports streaming is an ideal option because you can watch your favorite teams from anywhere, although that might mean getting up pretty early if you want to catch the Indiana Hoosiers in action while on vacation.

Watch Local TV Online

If you dont have an HD antenna, or live in a smaller town, you can watch local TV online using the websites of those TV stations.

This is a pretty neat little feature of the sites that allows you to watch local TV online in your area. Its also 100% free.

I recommend checking out some of their favorite channels, like , , .

Fubo has a free 7-day trial, and works on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV streaming devices. A subscription costs $69.99 per month. There is no contract. Customers can subscribe on a month-to-month basis.

How to cast your Windows desktop to a smart TV without a cable, and ...

One of the best options available for streaming local channels is through your TV. The major TV manufacturers, like Sony, Samsung and Roku, all have streaming services that allow you to watch live cable channels on your TV.

Its a lot like having a cable box, but you dont need to pay any fees or have any subscriptions.

Not only can you watch local channels, but you can also access other streaming services as well, including Netflix and Hulu.

Its not for everyone because some people dont like to switch inputs on their TV or use additional devices . But if youre looking for a good way to get around this issue.

What Streaming TV Services Won’t Give You

Streaming TV services are great, but there are some things they can’t do compared with a traditional cable box.

First, it’s worth looking at the channels that you can’t get with any of these live TV streaming services. For example, only two of the services are able to offer PBS: YouTube TV and DirecTV Stream.

With sports returning in force from the pandemic-enforced hiatus, fans will want to make sure they can find the sports channels to follow their teams. Most services carry ESPN and local channels for NFL football, but if you follow a professional baseball or basketball team, you might need its specific channel — called a regional sports network or RSN — to watch regular season games. RSN coverage varies widely for each service. Sometimes, even if you live in the right area, you may be mistakenly blacked out due to an IP address error. If this is the case, you can fix this by signing up for a sports-friendly VPN.

Every live TV service’s video streaming is a few seconds to a minute or more behind the “live” stream you’ll get from your local cable TV or satellite provider. That means you could get a preview of scores or big plays from Twitter, phone alerts or phone calls from friends slightly before you see the action on screen.

House of the Dragon on HBO Max is one of 2022’s hottest shows.

Subscribe To Youtube TV

A lot of people arent aware that YouTube has launched its own TV-like streaming service. Its called YouTube TV and it may be one of the best options out there right now if youre looking for live local channels without cable.

YouTube TV is available today in over 80 metro areas around the U.S., covering over 85% of the country. This includes all four major metros areas , as well as cities like Philadelphia, Atlanta, Miami, Baltimore, Seattle and more.

Interestingly enough, they are also offering a free 7-day trial that may be worth checking out if you want to see how it works.

How To Choose The Best Cable TV Alternative For You

You can filter through the best cable TV alternatives in a couple of ways. The easiest, of course, is by price. If you want to spend less than $40 per month, you’ve got an easy buying decision. Sling TV â either its Orange or Blue packages â is the only option, and it costs a relatively low $30 per month. It may not offer as many channels, but everything else starts at least at $50, which can be frustrating when you also want streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus that cost $6 to $13 per month.

But if you need all of your available local broadcast channels â ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC â your choices move away from Sling TV to all of its competitors. Hulu With Live is the most affordable to give you all four locals and costs $10 less than YouTube TV. Plus, you get those buzzworthy originals like Normal People, Shrill, Ramy and Little Fires Everywhere.

The Best Indoor TV Antenna

How to Watch Magnolia Network Without Cable in 2 Minutes!

This annual review covers the best indoor TV antennas.

In this years review, youll find a few new recommendations, some familiar faces from years past, and what to avoid.

My two top picks are the ClearStream Eclipse by Antennas Direct and Antop Paper Thin Smartpass. But after another year of testing, Ive found a few more excellent indoor TV antennas that might be a better fit for some people.

This guide is designed for helping people who have never used an indoor TV antenna, and want to shed their hefty monthly cable or satellite TV bills. Ive incorporated information from my first antenna guide, How to Choose The Best Antenna & OTA DVR, which is listed under the Cord-Cutting Guide page on AntennaWeb.org.

This years guide also covers what you should expect to get out of an antenna today and in the years to come. Some of what youll read here includes notes and findings on individual antenna reviews that I wrote throughout 2016 to 2019.

Should I Buy A TV Antenna For My TV

Variety magazines list of the 100 Most-Watched TV Shows highlights how much value a TV antenna can deliver.

NFL Sunday Night Football is on NBC. NFL Thursday Night Football is on FOX. Greys Anatomy is on ABC, The Equalizer and 60 Minutes is on CBS. And so on.

Savvy cord-cutters know that local channelscarry a surprising amount of news, sports and top-rated events such as the Super Bowl for free.

Cable companies actually charge you every month for this same programming. In March 2022, Spectrum increased its monthly broadcast fee to $21 per month for the same exact channels that are available for free.

With a TV antenna, you pay for your hardware once. So its a worthy investment for years of free live TV.

Heres another reason to ditch cable TV. Over-the-air channels are about to get even better. Local TV stations are transitioning to NextGen TV .

This new broadcast standard makes it possible to deliver better reception and picture resolution.

NextGen TV can deliver 1080p, 4K and HDR picture resolution. Thats a significant jump.

The current digital broadcasts standard is capable of High Definition picture resolution up to 720p or 1080i. Other stations, such as sub-channels, are using lower resolutions such as 480p.

Sports fans have an increasing number of streaming options that show live games, but depending on which sport you follow, the local team in your area and how many games you want to watch, it can get costly. Channels devoted to NBA basketball, NHL hockey and MLB baseball teams, known as regional sports networks, are available on most cable networks but are rare and expensive on streaming services. These are the channels you’ll need to watch most regular-season games for those sports .

Live TV streaming service DirecTV Stream’s $90 plan is often the only option if you want to watch your local RSN via streaming, although in some parts of the country a somewhat cheaper service will carry your channel. Coverage varies widely by sport, team and city, so check out our dedicated guides for more details — including exactly which services carry your local team and how much they cost.

Do I Need A 4k Or Hd Antenna

When you see terms like HD antenna or 4K Ready antenna, this is just marketing-speak. There are a wide variety of marketing blurbs on the front of antennas boxes, stating that the antenna is a HD antenna or 4K ready or ready for the next generation of broadcast television.

Antenna aficionados will tell you theres no such thing as an HD antenna, even though the term is widely used by manufacturers.

Heres another way of saying it.

Theres nothing special in the design of an antenna that gives it the ability to pick up HD signals. Digital television is broadcast in high definition 1080i and 720p resolutions. There are no over-the-air broadcasts in 4K. As my video on how to make a quick, homemade antenna demonstrates, a simple wire can get you HD channels.

The next generation of broadcast TV is a ways off. The Advanced Televisions Systems Committee is working on the next standard for broadcast television. The term ATSC 3.0 refers to this new standard, which is expected to include 4K picture quality and a number of other improvements. There are no 4K broadcasts over-the-air. And when they come, youll likely be shopping for a new converter box instead of an antenna.

Our Top Pick For Outdoor Antenna:

Our top pick for an outdoor antenna is the Five Star Outdoor Digital Amplified HDTV Antenna.

The 2020 release reaches up to the 200-mile range providing high-resolution HDTV 4K. This antenna allows viewers to access local news, sports programs and weather channels for free. We love this model because it supports five televisions in a household at once, along with FM radio broadcasting.

With the advanced VHF UHF six reflector reception elements, this improves the image quality up to 25% better than with just four elements. These larger elements also stabilize the signal. We also found the V-Band improves VHF HDTV quality by up to 50%.

The Package Includes the five-star antenna, installation kit with a 40ft coax cable, along with a 4-way splitter to watch four TVs. We found it easy to assemble, easy to install and great value for money.

The Cons:

With any antenna mounted outdoors, you need to make sure it wont suffer from wind damage.
